Mentoring Program

MGSM has established a mentoring program for students and members of the Alumni.  Mentoring is a way in which MGSM Alumni are able to help other graduates and current students establish goals, and develop skills in order to reach these goals.

It can assist the mentee to acquire the necessary skills, increase their confidence and widen perspectives. Mentees will learn to work through their errors and learn to avoid them, enhance both their career and personal life, and ultimately help their organisation with new insights and skills obtained.

Alumni mentors have a wealth of experience in a variety of areas. A mentor is not just a person with an MGSM postgraduate award, but an experienced practitioner in the business world, who have themselves, gained value from our network. A mentor is there to help students throughout their program of study at MGSM; to demonstrate how to focus on strengths and to make the most of studies while taking advantage of the extensive MGSM network.

The Mentoring Program is linked to both the Alumni Office and the MGSM Careers Service which can assist with activities such as resume improvement and interviewing skills. MGSM mentors can also offer valuable advice in this area. Who can better give a mentee insight into a specific business than someone already working in this area. A mentor may also be able to indicate what a particular industry is looking for, or even the type of questions which may be asked at interview.

A Mentor/Mentee relationship is only as valuable as the work that is put into it. It is not a method of acquiring internships or for asking favours. It is a professional and confidential partnership. The ultimate goal of the program is to match each participating student/graduate with an alumnus/alumna to whom that student/graduate will be able to turn for advice and information.

The current focus of the program is incoming students. The advantage of starting prior to enrollment is that a community spirit will carry through the students' time at MGSM and into their life as an MGSM Alumnus/Alumna. Mentors attend information evenings for potential students and answer questions from a graduate's perspective as well as attend orientation and enrollment. Mentors may be able to help with subject direction, career change issues and how to use the postgraduate award in the workplace.

Some mentors will choose to become more involved than others, depending on their time constraints. This does not mean that a couple of hours a month is not valuable. On the contrary, it is expected that, in the early stages of the program, a couple of hours a month is all that will be required.
